JOHN JAMES AUDUBON (1785-1851)
LITHOGRAPH ON PAPER, 6.5 inches X 10.25 inches (Sight)
Excellentcondition with no defects to report. As usual, one edge is slightly rough and
uneven from being removed from the binding.
This is an original hand-colored print - #394 - from the second octavo edition of John
James Audubons Birds of America, published in 1856.
Lithographed, printed, and colored by J.T. Bowen, Philadelphia, 1856.
The second octavo edition was produced under the supervision of Audubons son, Victor
GuiffordAudubon and features a combination of hand-coloring and stone lithography.
This second edition print has basically the same pedigree as the first edition print except
that it has BLOCK LETTERS in the credits instead of italics.
The credits are in BLOCK LETTERS,the identifying feature of second edition octavos numbered 151-500.
Although this print is a second edition, not a first edition, due to the presence of BLOCK LETTERS,
this is still NOT the Lockwood edition, which features a printedcolor background.
Nota bene: Two major web sites do not distinguish between"secondedition" and
"subsequent edition" and are selling printsfrom the Lockwood edition as thoughthey
were from the second edition, and as though there is not a world of difference in quality
between thesecond edition and the Lockwood edition. The "Lockwood edition" was
actually the 4th, 5th, 6th, and7th editions,and these prints were not hand-colored.
Comes in a plastic protector, and will be sandwiched between wider foam boards for mailing.
