DESCRIPTION
First edition of La Terra in Piazza An Interpretation of the Palio of Siena by Alan Dundes and Alessandro Falassi in the original publishers cloth binding and unclipped dust wrapper.
An interesting study of the tradition of the Palio of Sienna, a bi-annual horse race which occurs in the summer in Sienna, and dates back to the thirteenth century. It has great cultural significance to the Sienese.
A presentation copy of this work, signed and inscribed to a friend by Alessandro Falassi.
With twenty five colour plates, including the frontispiece, with sixty three illustrations including many photographs. Collated, complete.From the library of Lord Raglan, Fitzroy John Somerset. Raglan’s great-great-grandfather was Field Marshal Fitzroy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan and hero of the Battle at Inkerman and Alma in the Crimean War. He also served as military secretary to the Duke of Wellington. He died in the Crimea in 1855. The house in which the library was situated, Cefntilla Court, was purchased by the Raglan Memorial committee for his descendants. Lord Raglan was a keen collector of anthropology and folklore, with many of the works in his extensive library focusing upon this topic.
CONDITION
In the original publishers cloth binding and unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, smart. There is some wear to the extremities of the dust wrapper, including a few small closed tears, light creasing, and age toning. To the binding, there is some minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are very bright and clean.
