En 2007, l'artiste coréenne Lee Bul crée pour la Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain une installation monumentale composée de 12 sculptures en cristal et aluminium, formant un paysage de ruines et de vestiges scintillants à l'atmosphère sombre et envoûtante. Suspendues dans les airs ou ancrées au sol sur lequel elles se reflètent, ces sculptures constituent un environnement unique, pensé spécifiquement pour l'architecture de Jean Nouvel.
Miroir, reflets, perles et métal travaillés à la façon d'une dentelle, l'admirable légèreté de ces amples volumes constitue le fil conducteur du catalogue de l'exposition, conçu comme un véritable livre-objet. Cet ouvrage fait la part belle aux photographies de l'installation dans les espaces de la Fondation Cartier tandis que des dessins de l'artiste mettent en exergue la référence aux architectures utopiques de Bruno Taut (1880-1938). Un entretien avec Lee Bul apporte un éclairage théorique à son travail qui, au-delà du pur esthétisme, confronte une vision idéalisée du monde et une réflexion sur les épisodes sombres de l'histoire coréenne.
